As a true lover of horror movies, I cannot help but feel thrilled every time Friday the 13th is mentioned. The New Blood, the seventh installment of the franchise, definitely delivered in terms of giving its fans an adrenaline-pumping ride. Released in 1988 and directed by John Carl Buechler, this movie had everything a horror fanatic could want: suspenseful plot twists, a formidable killer, and memorable characters.
The storyline continued where the previous film left off; Jason Voorhees was presumed dead after being chained and drowned at Crystal Lake. However, he is resurrected again when Tina Shepard, a young psychic girl who blames herself for her father’s death when she was younger, accidentally brings him back to life using her telekinetic powers. As a result of this mistake, Jason acquires new abilities that make him even more difficult to stop.
The plot thickens when Tina realizes that her psychic powers create enormous amounts of anxiety for her as she can’t control them. After coming to the realization that she caused Jason’s resurrection, she decides to use her abilities to put an end to his killing spree. This decision ultimately leads to a climactic battle between the two in which Tina must battle not only Jason but also her own internal struggles.
This film boasts some terrific acting from its cast members. Kane Hodder gives an intimidating performance as the undead hockey-masked killer while Lar Park Lincoln plays a vulnerable yet determined protagonist as Tina Shepard. Kevin Blair delivers an entertaining performance as Michael, one of Tina’s love interests who isn’t afraid to throw down with Jason himself.
One memorable scene from this movie is when Jason rips someone’s heart out and eats it – talk about gore! Of course, it wouldn’t be Friday the 13th without some innovative kills that leave viewers with chills up their spines.
As far as awards and accolades go, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood was unfortunately snubbed in that department. Still, the film’s popularity endures to this day and has solidified itself as a beloved classic among horror fans.
The cinematography in this movie is masterful. The lighting, set design, camera angles, and atmosphere all create an immersive experience. It’s easy to get lost in the world of Friday the 13th when watching this movie.
The filming process wasn’t without its challenges though. For example, actress Lar Park Lincoln had to do several scenes underwater while wearing only a thin layer of clothing and no scuba gear whatsoever! Talk about dedication!
The special effects in The New Blood are also commendable, especially considering that they were done before the era of CGI. From Jason’s makeup to the practical effects used to create some of the more gruesome deaths, it’s clear that the crew put a lot of care into making this film as terrifying as possible.
Of course, not everyone was impressed by The New Blood. Some critics took issue with its formulaic plot and accused it of relying too heavily on jump scares rather than developing its characters’ personalities more thoroughly.
Despite any criticisms leveled against it, however, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood remains an exciting entry in the series and a must-see for horror enthusiasts everywhere. Whether you’re revisiting it or seeing it for the first time, prepare yourself for a wild ride!
