In the year 1981, a movie called “Clash of the Titans” was released to theatres, and it quickly became a hit among moviegoers. The film is about the Greek mythological hero Perseus as he attempts to defeat various monsters and save Andromeda, a princess who has been sacrificed to the sea monster known as the Kraken.
The story of “Clash of the Titans” is incredibly engaging. We see Perseus, who is played by Harry Hamlin, going on a journey to stop his nemesis Hades, god of the underworld, from overthrowing Zeus and conquering Olympus. In order to do so, he must defeat Medusa and retrieve her head as a weapon.
The plot is filled with mythical creatures such as scorpions, giant vultures and giant sea monsters; all brought to life by some great special effects. Even after all these years, it’s still impressive how they managed to create these fantastical beings without CGI.
The cast is also strong. Lawrence Olivier plays Zeus, who tries his best to protect his fellow gods from Hades; Maggie Smith plays Thetis; and Burgess Meredith plays Ammon – all familiar faces in Hollywood at that time.
One standout moment in the film is when Perseus faces off against Medusa. He knows that he must avoid eye contact with her or else he’ll be turned into stone. It’s an incredibly tense scene that really showcases Harry Hamlin’s acting ability.
The dialogue in “Clash of the Titans” is memorable too. There are plenty of one-liners that can make you smile or even laugh out loud – “Release the Kraken!” being one of them.
When “Clash of the Titans” was first released it received mixed reviews from critics but did quite well at the box office at $70 million which was quite an accomplishment at that time considering there were no massive budgets and special effects in movies back then. The film’s appeal lies in its ability to capitalize on the deeply ingrained myths of ancient Greece and bring them to life.
The score for this film is a masterpiece, composed by Laurence Rosenthal it adds another level of depth to the already fantastic movie. It’s grandiose, full of energy and perfectly brings the film’s mythology to life.
As with any great film, there are those who criticize “Clash of the Titans” for its over-the-top moments or its inconsistencies with ancient mythology. But those complaints do little to detract from the pure joy that comes from watching a classic hero’s journey brought to life on screen.
Interestingly, “Clash Of The Titans” was not filmed entirely in Greece but instead, locations such as Lanzarote in the Canary Islands were used since they were more affordable and easier to work with for director Desmond Davis. Even so, they did manage to capture some truly beautiful shots that show off the rich landscapes and architecture that you would find in Greece.
It would be remiss not to mention one of the most popular scenes in “Clash of the Titans” – when Perseus finally defeats the Kraken by using Medusa’s head as a weapon. It’s an absolutely epic moment that showcases just how far this hero has come throughout his journey.
While we wouldn’t say that “Clash of The Titans” is going to win any awards for innovation when it comes special effects or cinematography today, it remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved classics. It wasn’t made with state-of-the-art technology or backed by hundreds of millions – but sometimes that’s precisely what makes a movie so special.
