Review

When you think of the Beat Generation, you probably think of free-spirited writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. But what you may not have realized is that this group of rebellious thinkers was also marked by their entanglements in scandal and even murder. It is precisely this juxtaposition of literary genius and criminality that makes the movie “Kill Your Darlings” so fascinating.

The film tells the tale of Ginsberg’s involvement with his fellow future-beatniks at Columbia University, including Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), William Burroughs (Ben Foster), and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston). But it is Carr’s relationship with a man named David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) that sets off a series of events leading to murder, blackmail, and ultimately, artistic inspiration.

The acting in “Kill Your Darlings” is simply superb. DeHaan shines as the charismatic but troubled Carr, while Daniel Radcliffe shows remarkable range as Ginsberg. It’s hard not to admire the bravery required to take on a role so different from his Harry Potter days. Foster captures Burroughs’ unique blend of intellect and weirdness perfectly, while Hall brings a haunting intensity to his portrayal of Kammerer.

But it’s not just the cast that makes “Kill Your Darlings” such an engrossing watch. The script itself crackles with intelligence and humor, thanks in part to writer/director John Krokidas’ extensive research on the Beat Generation. He brings forth a wealth of fascinating details about these literary legends, such as Kerouac writing his novels on one long roll of paper so he wouldn’t have to stop typing.

Krokidas also deftly weaves history into the story, reminding us that these were turbulent times in America. While Ginsberg and his friends were exploring new avenues for artistic expression, others were fighting for their civil rights and the country was embroiled in the Cold War. It’s no wonder that this atmosphere of rebellion and uncertainty would produce such unconventional artists.

The movie also boasts a fantastic soundtrack, with standout tracks by jazz legends like Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. And while the score is mostly understated, there are a few key moments where it swells to great effect, heightening the tension of pivotal scenes.

“Kill Your Darlings” has garnered much critical acclaim since its release in 2013. It won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was nominated for numerous other awards, including a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor (Hall). But perhaps the most impressive feat is how it manages to take a story about literary figures from decades past and make it feel fresh and relevant. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you think, laugh, and appreciate the power of artistic expression, “Kill Your Darlings” is not to be missed.

Of course, no movie is without its detractors. Some have criticized “Kill Your Darlings” for taking too many liberties with history, particularly in how it portrays Kammerer’s death. But Krokidas himself has stated that he wasn’t trying to create a strictly factual account of events; rather, he wanted to capture the spirit of these writers’ lives and times.

Others may find fault in some of the more stylized aspects of the film. For example, there are several scenes where graphics pop up on screen to illustrate Ginsberg or Carr’s thoughts. While some viewers may find this distracting or unnecessary, others will appreciate how it adds an extra layer to their characterizations.

Despite any criticism thrown its way, “Kill Your Darlings” remains an engaging and thought-provoking movie that explores fascinating themes of creativity, sexuality, and rebellion. It’s not often that we get such an intimate look at literary giants like Kerouac and Ginsberg, and Krokidas deserves credit for bringing their stories to the screen with such skill and craft. Whether you’re a die-hard Beat Generation fan or just looking for a well-made movie, “Kill Your Darlings” is sure to leave an impression.
