Review
In the small town of Honey Island, Louisiana, there is a legend of a vengeful spirit that haunts the swamps. The legend of Victor Crowley dates back to 1964, when the deformed child was accidentally killed by his father while trying to escape a burning shack. Now, years later, a group of friends finds themselves stranded in the swamp and face-to-face with the infamous Victor Crowley.
“Victor Crowley” is a horror movie that captures the essence of terror, fear and revenge. Written and directed by Adam Green, this film takes viewers on an adrenaline-fueled ride with intense scares and gore.
The story begins with Andrew Yong (Parry Shen), who runs a tourist boat on the Honey Island Swamp and tries to forget about his tragic past involving Victor Crowley. However, fate has other plans when his boat crashes and he’s stranded with a group of friends in need of rescue.
As they try to find their way out, they stumble upon the ghostly figure of Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder), who starts hunting them down one by one. What follows is an intense game of cat-and-mouse as they try to survive the night with this supernatural killer on their tail.
What makes “Victor Crowley” stand out from other slasher flicks is its use of humor amidst all the bloodshed. The characters’ quips and banter provide some much-needed levity to break up some of the tension – which only fuels more tension once Victor makes an appearance.
The cast delivers solid performances all around. Parry Shen quickly establishes himself as a likable lead character while Kane Hodder is terrifyingly convincing as Victor Crowley. The supporting cast – Laura Ortiz, Dave Sheridan and Felissa Rose – also bring depth to their characters despite limited screen time.
The film’s score by Andrew Morgan Smith adds an eerie touch to every scene while also paying homage to classic horror movies. The cinematography by Jan-Michael Losada captures the claustrophobic setting of the swamp and the visceral violence that ensues.
Shot on location in Louisiana, the film benefits from its natural setting, giving an authentic feel to every scene. The special effects and practical makeup also deserve praise for their attention to detail and gruesome realism.
Despite being a low-budget production, “Victor Crowley” has garnered a cult following since its release in 2017. The movie has been praised by horror fans for staying true to classic slasher tropes while also providing some fresh twists.
The film’s success has led to a sequel already in development. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Green revealed that “Victor Crowley 2” will take place ten years after the events of the first movie and will explore more of Victor’s backstory.
Critics have lauded “Victor Crowley” for its fun, fast-paced thrills and solid performances. However, some have criticized the movie for its reliance on cliches and predictable jump scares. Nevertheless, the film remains a must-see for fans of brutal horror movies.
As Gabriel Garcia Marquez once said, “What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it.” And for those who have seen “Victor Crowley,” they will surely remember it as a bloody good time.
