Ladies and gentlemen, hold onto your seats, because I’ve just watched one of the wildest, most intense movies I’ve ever seen: Breeder. This suspenseful thriller directed by Jens Dahl packs a punch from start to finish. It’s a film that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time – trust me.
At its core, Breeder tells the story of Mia (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen) a well-respected artist who finds herself in a world of pain when she becomes involved with an underground organization that claims to be working towards improving humanity.
As intriguing as that may seem, this movie isn’t for everyone. Some scenes are graphic and unsettling, and it definitely earns its R rating with its gore factor. Nonetheless, if you’re a fan of horror movies that make you think while also delivering solid scares and thrills – this one is for you.
One thing I particularly enjoyed about this film was how real the characters felt. They all had their own motives and were perfectly acted by the cast, including actors like Anders Heinrichsen, Morten Holst, Signe Egholm Olsen, Jens Andersen and more.
The story examines some heavy themes throughout the film such as classism, power dynamics with people using their power to manipulate others for their gain or pleasure in various contexts and how society perceives beauty standards in women.
One quote from Mia’s character really stuck with me: “Art never comes from happiness.” It’s a powerful statement that can be applied not only to art but life itself.
I must praise Jens Dahl’s approach to directing this movie too. The cinematography provided some stunning shots that made me feel as though I was living through what Mia was experiencing on-screen. The score was also a standout for me as it conveyed dreary and suspenseful atmospheres brilliantly.
Not only does Breeder succeed in telling an intricate plot with an interesting cast of characters, but it also delivers some much-needed originality to the horror genre. The production design was fantastic, and the special effects were also brilliantly done.
In terms of awards and recognition, Breeder caused a stir following its release in 2020. It was praised at film festivals such as Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival and Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
As with all movies, there’s bound to be criticism for Breeder too. Some have said that the character development could have been fleshed out more and that some of the explicit scenes may be off-putting for general audiences.
Overall, I’d give this movie two enthusiastic thumbs up. I loved how it made me think about ethical issues in society while also delivering a punchy story that kept me engaged throughout.
Breeder is by no means an easy watch – but if you’re up for a challenge and want something unique in the horror genre – this one is worth checking out.
