Dear reader, it is with immense pleasure that I pen down my thoughts on the movie “Camino”. Directed by Josh C. Waller and written by Daniel Noah, this modern-day masterpiece features a gripping storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Set in the lush and scenic terrain of Colombia, this film boasts an impressive cast that breathes life into their respective characters.
The plot revolves around the Dutch photojournalist, Avery Taggert (Zoe Bell), who embarks on a dangerous and treacherous journey into the jungles of Colombia to capture images for her latest book. However, little does she know that her quest will turn into a fight for survival when she becomes the target of a ruthless group of guerrilla fighters led by Guillermo (Nacho Vigalondo).
As I watched this film, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the excellent acting skills demonstrated by Zoe Bell as Avery Taggert. She effortlessly portrays the character’s grit and determination to expose the truth, even if it would cost her everything.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this movie is its attention to detail when it comes to portraying real-life events accurately. The story is loosely based on true events surrounding photojournalist Scott Dalton’s kidnapping in Colombia in 2003. This gives it an added layer of authenticity that makes it all the more captivating.
The score and popularity rate high amongst critiques as well. Composed by Kreng, it sets an eerie tone from start to finish which draws from its fantastical elements with an impressive soundtrack adored by many.
Filming took place in Cartagena de Indias which lent itself to stunning backdrops during shooting. This paired with well-executed special effects scenes creates an immersive experience hard not to appreciate.
It must be said that this movie isn’t without controversy though. Upon release there were some who felt its portrayal of Colombians was reductive and unflattering. Indeed, the guerrillas’ brutal tactics can make it difficult to fully appreciate the beautiful cinematography and impressive action sequences.
As someone who enjoyed this movie, I can’t help but feel like critics may be overlooking its hidden messages. Yes, the protagonist is a white foreigner who overpowers Colombian enemies, but we mustn’t forget Avery’s journey is a quest for truth rather than domination.
Overall, “Camino” is a thrilling ride that will leave you breathless and engaged from start to finish. Its message of journalistic integrity and bravery amidst perilous situations makes it worth viewing for anyone who adores this genre. In my opinion, it has all the elements of a great film- fantastic acting, immersive setting and thrilling plot- which make it worthy of your attention.
In the words of Avery Taggert: “I don’t want an easy road; I want the truth.” Well said indeed.
