Review
Ahoy there folks! The movie “Ella Enchanted” is a masterpiece of story-telling and creative imagination that takes us to a magical land far far away, where ogres and giants roam the earth, and fairy godmothers bestow gifts of beauty and charm. Written by Gail Carson Levine, the novel “Ella Enchanted” was first published in 1997, which was later adapted for the silver screen by director Tommy O’Haver in 2004.
Set in a medieval countryside of Frell, the movie tells the story of Ella (Anne Hathaway), a young girl who is cursed with obedience. That means she must obey any command given to her no matter what it is – from cleaning up foul toilets to dancing on stage like a monkey. As a result, she becomes miserable and longs for freedom from this curse.
The plot thickens when she embarks on a journey to find Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox), the fairy godmother who placed the curse on her. Along the way, she meets Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy) whom she falls in love with but cannot express her feelings because of the curse.
As Ella’s adventure progresses, she meets different creatures like giants and elves who help her on her quest. The story builds towards an exciting conclusion as Ella must use courage and wit to break free from her curse and save Prince Charmont from an evil plot by his uncle Edgar (Cary Elwes).
The casting choices in “Ella Enchanted” were spot-on with Anne Hathaway playing Ella’s character flawlessly. She portrayed Ella’s pure heartedness, determination, wit, and vulnerability perfectly. Hugh Dancy’s portrayal of Prince Charmont was equally impressive as he played his role with charm, wit, and sincerity that truly made him lovable.
Other notable actors include Vivica A. Fox who played Lucinda, the eccentric fairy godmother, and Cary Elwes who played the evil uncle Edgar flawlessly. The supporting cast members such as Minnie Driver who played Mandy, Ella’s caretaker, and Joanna Lumley who played Dame Olga were equally outstanding.
The movie’s soundtrack was also on point. With songs like “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” by Anne Hathaway and Jesse McCartney and “It’s Not Just Make-Believe” by Kari Kimmel, the music complemented the scenes well and added to the overall experience of watching the film.
The settings were equally breathtaking. From the stunning palace scenes to the dark and eerie forest scenes, director Tommy O’Haver captured everything beautifully. The cinematography was top-notch too. The use of CGI to create magical creatures like elves and giants was also impressive.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, “Ella Enchanted” gained a cult following over the years because of its charm, humor, and impeccable execution. It won Best Family Film at the Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards in 2004 and was nominated for several other awards including Best Costume Design at the Academy Awards.
However, some critics criticized it for being too predictable and lacking depth in character development. They felt that some characters were underdeveloped such as Prince Charmont who could have been given more screen time.
But one cannot deny that “Ella Enchanted” is a timeless classic that has something for everyone – romance, comedy, adventure, magic, music, action – all wrapped up in a beautiful package of storytelling. It is a must-watch movie for anyone who loves fantasy or fairy tales with a twist.
Overall, “Ella Enchanted” is a captivating movie with top-notch acting performances, enchanting music score and stunning visuals that will transport you to another world entirely. It is a testament to Gail Carson Levine’s incredible writing skills and Tommy O’Haver’s directorial vision that will continue to enchant audiences for years to come. “Ella Enchanted” is truly a gem in the world of fantasy movies and I highly recommend it to everyone.
