It was an absolute hootenanny when I first laid eyes on the zany animated flick, “Heavy Traffic.” With a twinkle in my eye and a tall glass of sarsaparilla in hand, I couldn’t help but be drawn into the crazy world of cartoonist Ralph Bakshi’s imagination. This film is a real humdinger, I tell ya!
The storyline follows the exploits of Michael, a young aspiring cartoonist who gets caught up in the gritty underworld of New York City. He meets a colorful cast of characters along the way, including his overbearing Italian-American mother and his father, who’s a bit of an oddball himself. There’s also Carole, Michael’s girlfriend who becomes entangled in his dangerous world.
I tell ya, this movie had it all! From wild car chases to psychedelic dream sequences, it was a real gas from start to finish. The animation was like nothing I’d ever seen before – it was edgy and raw, full of vibrant colors and intricate detail.
But what really made this movie shine were the top-notch voice acting performances by some real heavy hitters in the entertainment industry. Lenny Bruce himself lent his voice to one of the characters, and boy did he bring his A-game! His character was irreverent and hilarious – exactly what you’d expect from Bruce.
