Review

It is with tremendous satisfaction that I report of the delightful film “I Love You Again,” released in 1940 and directed by W. S. Van Dyke. This masterpiece of a movie was adapted from a novel by Octavus Roy Cohen, a writer who has achieved moderate success in his career.

The story of this film centers on Larry Wilson (William Powell), a middle-aged man who suffers an injury to his head, which awakens an entirely new personality. It transpires that Larry had been an amnesiac for ten years and had been living a false life as a successful businessman in an idyllic town.

While trying to convince his former wife, Kay (Myrna Loy), of his true identity, Larry falls back in love with her and sets out to right the wrongs he committed in his past life as the rather unsavory Goring.

This movie marks another remarkable collaboration between Powell and Loy, one that has brought fans of their work consistent joy throughout the years. Their chemistry is undeniable and their performances are top-notch.

The supporting cast is also exceptional; Edgar Kennedy’s performance as Herbert Jenkins was particularly memorable.

The plotline may be convoluted at times, but it is always delivered with precision due to the talented operating crew working on this production. The scriptwriters managed to weave action, drama, and comedy together seamlessly.

One standout scene from this film is when Larry finally decides to communicate the truth about his double personality to Kay:

Kay: “You must believe me when I say that I can’t love you again.”

Larry: “I know that.”

Kay: “I’m sorry… but even if you were only Larry Wilson, I still couldn’t.”

Larry: “No?”

Kay: “No… because he’s too much like Goring – too selfish and egotistical.”

Larry (smiling): “That’s because he doesn’t love you enough.”

The cinematographic score supporting this dialogue was superb, truly a product of the time. The musical compositions by Franz Waxman added another layer of depth to this movie and showcased his talents remarkably.

The popularity of “I Love You Again” has stood the test of time, earning it a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is an absolute joy that this film has remained available to people and will undoubtedly continue to be cherished for years to come.

It’s worth noting that this movie marked one of the last Powell and Loy collaborations as they fell out with MGM after Loy refused to play the female lead in “The Philadelphia Story,” which ultimately went on to earn Katherine Hepburn countless accolades.

There are numerous bits of fascinating trivia associated with “I Love You Again.” One example is that director Van Dyke played golf frequently with Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, who both appeared in previous releases he helmed. Their tragic deaths in 1942 also contributed significantly to Van Dyke retiring from directing movies.

Despite some criticism for its implausible premise, lacking social commentary, and an over-reliance on clichéd storytelling tropes, there’s no denying that this movie still holds up today due to its strong cast performances, engaging plotline, snappy dialogue writing and captivating scenery.

If you haven’t seen “I Love You Again” yet, I would highly recommend you do so immediately! It’s difficult not to fall in love with Larry Wilson as you watch him rediscover himself while simultaneously falling back in love with Kay. Any fan of Powell and Loy’s work will appreciate what they brought to the table here.
