Review

It was a summer evening in the small town of McCall, Idaho when director Lawrence Kasdan’s “I Love You to Death” premiered. The movie, with its star-studded cast and a unique storyline, soon captured the hearts of audiences around the world.

The plot revolved around the character of Rosalie, played superbly by Tracy Ullman, who discovers that her husband Joey (Kevin Kline) has been cheating on her with numerous women. Despite Joey’s infidelity, Rosalie remains fiercely loyal to him and goes to great lengths to keep their marriage intact.

The film’s storyline was inspired by real-life events that occurred in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1984. It was widely reported that Frances Toto had tried multiple times to kill her husband Anthony Toto but failed each time. The film added some twists and turns to create an unpredictable and thrilling story.

Kevin Kline delivered his usual charming performance as the philandering Joey who is completely unaware of how much he is loved by his wife. Tracy Ullman’s portrayal of Rosalie was poignant and touching. She portrayed a woman who was determined to hold on to her marriage no matter what it takes.

River Phoenix played Devo Nod, the young man whom Rosalie hires to kill her husband. While Phoenix’s role did not demand too much screen time, it served as another example of his brilliance as an actor before his untimely death in 1993.

One of the most memorable lines from the film comes from Kevin Kline’s character when he exclaims: “I don’t think I’m that different from any other guy.” The line speaks volumes about how little Joey understands about himself and his relationship with Rosalie.

The movie also features several cameo appearances including William Hurt as Harlan James, Keanu Reeves as Marlon James, Joan Plowright as Nadja and James Gammon as Lt. Schooner. With so many talented actors involved, the film was bound to be a success.

The movie was released in 1990 and received mixed reviews from critics. However, it performed well at the box office and became a cult classic over time. The film’s score by composer James Horner was also well-received and added to the movie’s overall charm.

The cinematography of “I Love You to Death” is impressive as well. The vibrant colors of McCall, Idaho capture the essence of Americana life perfectly, while still providing an edge that keeps the viewer on their toes.

The film was a testament to the talent of Lawrence Kasdan who had previously directed hits such as “The Big Chill” and “Body Heat”. Kasdan’s outstanding direction kept the story moving smoothly even as it took some dark turns.

Despite its success, “I Love You to Death” did not receive any major awards nominations. It’s surprising given how much critical acclaim Kevin Kline and Tracy Ullman received for their performances in this film.

For those who haven’t seen it yet, “I Love You to Death” is definitely worth checking out for its unique storyline, incredible cast and stellar direction. It’s a reminder that love can make even the most unlikely situations seem bearable.

In conclusion, “I Love You to Death” is one of those movies that stays with you long after you’ve watched it. The film’s quirky take on love and marriage will leave you feeling both amused and touched at the same time. With great writing, directing and acting, this gem deserves more recognition than it has received.
