Review

It was the fall of 1997 when the world witnessed the birth of a masterpiece. A movie that would go down in history as one of the greatest psychological thrillers ever made – “Kiss the Girls.” This movie, directed by Gary Fleder, based on the novel of James Patterson, is a chilling tale of a serial killer who preys on young women in North Carolina. The movie stars Morgan Freeman in the lead role as Dr. Alex Cross, a forensic psychologist and detective hunting for the twisted killer.

The story takes place in Durham, North Carolina, where Dr. Cross is asked to investigate a missing person case. He discovers that this is just one amongst many such cases all over North Carolina, as a serial kidnapper-killer has been lurking around abducting young women. The villain is known only as “Casanova,” and his M.O. (modus operandi) involves luring his victims and then striking with deadly precision in remote areas.

What makes this movie truly exceptional is not just its edge-of-the-seat plot but also its phenomenal cast featuring Ashley Judd as Dr. Kate McTiernan – one of Casanova’s victims who escaped from his grasp – and Cary Elwes playing the wealthy professor Nick Ruskin (who turns out to be another prime suspect) along with Tony Goldwyn who portrays Detective Nick Ruskin.

The villains’ modus operandi has parallels to real-life serial killers like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer and adds to the terrifying realism of this film. The killer’s nickname “Casanova” itself throws us back into history books where he was an Italian seducer known for his many affairs with women.

One particular scene worth mentioning takes place when Dr. Cross visits his grandmother’s house where he finds himself discussing ancient African folklore which later plays relevant role in catching Casanova – who uses Voudon or African spiritualism rituals for his killings. This adds an interesting element of cultural depth to the film.

The movie also features an extraordinary score composed by Mark Isham. The music complements the movie’s tenor at different scenes, be it for suspense or action, making it a worthy nominee for awards like Best Original Score at the Academy Awards.

The cinematography is handled by Aaron Schneider, which plays well with the storyline’s moods right from the opening shot that glides across a dense forest. The camera angles keep up with each character’s point of view and provide distinct perspectives during the most intense moments.

“Kiss the Girls” was not only one of 1997’s highest-grossing movies but also a critical success being nominated for Best Actress in Supporting Role (Ashley Judd) at the Golden Globe Awards alongside being nominated as Best Thriller Film and Best Actor in Leading Role (Morgan Freeman) at Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.

Nevertheless, some critics felt that “Kiss The Girls” could have done better regarding its writing and dialogue. A few skeptical reviewers thought that some sequences seemed far-fetched and some supporting characters were not too convincing enough about their roles.

However, such criticisms do little to take away from this masterpiece’s accomplishments. “Kiss The Girls” is still highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a thriller that keeps them on edge throughout its duration while intriguing them with intelligent twists and insights into human nature.

In conclusion, “Kiss The Girls” is one of those films so structurally and artistically achieved that it deserves all of its accolades. It features gripping performances, imaginative visuals, thrilling suspenseful moments, memorable dialogue – all building up to capture our attention throughout its duration and leaving an unforgettable mark on our minds long after it has finished. To quote Dr. Alex Cross’ grandmother in one scene: “It takes a village to catch a devil”, this film requires more than just seasoned policing. It needs incredible teamwork between producers, directors, cast and crews to create something so entertaining.
