Review

Have you ever seen a horror movie that involves a giant wild boar? It may sound absurd, but Razorback proves that it’s possible to make it terrifying. This 1984 Australian film, directed by Russell Mulcahy and based on Peter Brennan’s novel of the same name, offers a unique premise and stunning visuals that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The film follows Jake Cullen (Bill Kerr), a retired hunter who witnesses the disappearance of his grandson while under his care. The authorities dismiss his claims, blaming it on an animal attack. However, Jake believes that a monstrous boar is responsible for the tragedy. He sets out to find and kill the beast, leading him to cross paths with Carl Winters (Gregory Harrison), an American journalist researching on illegal animal trade in Australia.

The plot may seem simple, but it’s not just about hunting down a vicious animal. Razorback tackles themes such as grief, guilt, and environmentalism. As Jake uncovers the truth behind his grandson’s fate, he must also confront his own mistakes as a hunter. Meanwhile, Carl discovers the horrors of animal captivity and exploitation in his investigation.

The cast delivers solid performances, especially Harrison as the outsider trying to understand Australian culture and customs. The real star of the show is undoubtedly the titular Razorback. The animatronic puppet used for its design is impressive even by today’s standards. You can feel its menace and power in every scene where it appears.

Mulcahy’s direction is equally noteworthy. He infuses the film with surreal imagery and stylized visuals reminiscent of music videos (which he became famous for directing). The nighttime chase scenes are particularly stunning with their neon lights and fast-paced editing.

The score by Iva Davies adds to the film’s haunting atmosphere with its mix of electronic sounds and traditional instruments like didgeridoo. It also features several songs from Davies’ band Icehouse, including the memorable “Great Southern Land” that plays during the opening credits.

Despite its cult following, Razorback didn’t receive much critical acclaim at the time of its release. Some reviewers found it too silly or cheesy, while others praised its technical aspects but criticized its characters and plot. However, it has since gained recognition as a unique and influential work in Australian cinema.

Razorback’s impact can be seen in other films that feature killer animals like Jaws, Cujo, and Anaconda. It also inspired a whole subgenre of horror known as “ozploitation,” which focused on low-budget but high-concept movies made in Australia during the 70s and 80s.

The film’s legacy continues with a recent announcement of a remake in development by director Russell Mulcahy himself. Fans are eagerly awaiting how he will update and expand on the original story.

In conclusion, Razorback may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely worth watching for anyone who enjoys horror movies that take risks. Its blend of action, drama, and surrealism make it a standout among other creature features. As Carl Winters says in the film: “Australia is different.” Razorback certainly proves that statement right.
