The Back-Up Plan: A Hemingway-Style Take on a Modern Rom-Com
The Back-Up Plan is a movie that tells the story of a woman who decides to have a child on her own, only to meet the man of her dreams shortly after. The film stars Jennifer Lopez as Zoe, a woman who has put her love life on hold in order to focus on her career and her dream of having a child. With the help of modern technology, she becomes pregnant via artificial insemination.
The film opens with Zoe in the midst of her journey to motherhood. She’s nervous and understandably hesitant about going through with the procedure alone, but she’s nonetheless determined to become a mother. As she waits for the procedure to begin, she heads out into the streets of New York City and finds herself crossing paths with Stan (Alex O’Loughlin), a handsome stranger who instantly captures her attention.
As is often the case in romantic comedies like this one, Zoe and Stan have an immediate connection. They flirt and banter, and it becomes clear that they are both attracted to each other. However, Zoe is hesitant to pursue anything further. After all, she’s just become pregnant with someone else’s child.
Despite her reservations, Stan persists in his pursuit of Zoe. He shows up at her flower shop and asks her out on a date, which leads to another date and then another. They fall into an easy rhythm together, despite all the complications that come along with Zoe’s pregnancy.
Meanwhile, Zoe deals with the challenges that come along with pregnancy – morning sickness, doctor appointments, baby showers – all while trying to navigate this new relationship with Stan. It’s not easy for either of them.
One of the most memorable scenes in the film takes place when Zoe goes for an ultrasound appointment without Stan by her side. Instead, she brings along her best friend Mona (Michaela Watkins). As they watch the monitor, they see the baby moving – an incredibly emotional moment for both Zoe and Mona.
As the pregnancy progresses, Zoe and Stan continue to grow closer. They bond over their shared love for animals (Stan is a cheese maker who also runs a small farm), and they start talking about their future together as a family. But as any romantic comedy fan knows, things are never quite so simple.
Zoe’s insecurities about becoming a mom start to surface, and she begins to fear that she won’t be a good enough parent. Meanwhile, Stan has his own insecurities to contend with – namely, his fear of commitment. He’s been hurt in the past and is hesitant to jump into something serious.
Despite these challenges, the two of them continue to move forward. They meet each other’s families (Zoe’s parents are played by Linda Lavin and Tom Bosley), go on romantic dates, and even attend childbirth classes together. It seems like nothing can stand in their way… until it does.
The film’s climax comes when Zoe goes into labor while out on a date with Stan. They rush to the hospital together, where things take an unexpected turn. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that there is drama, tears, and ultimately – love.
In the end, The Back-Up Plan is a sweet and enjoyable romantic comedy that will likely satisfy fans of the genre. Jennifer Lopez shines as Zoe, bringing both vulnerability and strength to her character. Alex O’Loughlin is equally charming as Stan, making it easy to see why Zoe falls for him.
The film also boasts some memorable supporting performances from Michaela Watkins (as Zoe’s best friend) and Eric Christian Olsen (as Stan’s friend/realtor). The soundtrack is catchy (featuring songs by Colbie Caillat and OneRepublic), and the New York City setting adds an extra layer of charm.
All that said, The Back-Up Plan is not a perfect movie. The plot is fairly predictable, and there are some cheesy moments sprinkled throughout. It’s also worth noting that the film received mixed reviews upon its release in 2010.
But if you’re in the mood for a light, feel-good rom-com with a strong female lead and a charming male lead, then you could do worse than The Back-Up Plan. And who knows? Maybe it will inspire you to take a chance on love – even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. As Hemingway once said, “The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.”
