The One I Love is a thought-provoking and surreal movie about relationships. The film tells the story of Ethan and Sophie, a couple who embark on a weekend retreat to save their failing marriage. As soon as they arrive, Ethan and Sophie begin to notice strange occurrences. They start to notice things that seem too good to be true, only to find out that they’re not actually real. They question their sanity and try to make sense of what’s happening around them.
The cast of The One I Love is led by Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss, both giving outstanding performances as Ethan and Sophie. Their chemistry is palpable, which makes their relationship feel genuine and relatable.
One of my favorite scenes in the film is when Ethan and Sophie are sitting on a bench overlooking a beautiful lake. They start off by discussing how they met each other, which leads them into deeper conversations about their relationship.
“I remember looking at you across the room and thinking, ‘whoa,'” says Ethan.
“Whoa?” Sophie responds.
“Yeah, just whoa,” he says with a smile.
Their conversation continues down a darker path as they discuss the shortcomings in their relationship. It’s a powerful scene that showcases both Duplass’ and Moss’ acting abilities.
The One I Love was directed by Charlie McDowell with an excellent score composed by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans. The film’s cinematography was done by Doug Emmett who did an incredible job capturing the surreal elements in the movie.
