“The Score” – A Masterpiece in the Making

When it comes to heist movies, there are a few classics that come to mind – “The Italian Job”, “Ocean’s Eleven,” and of course, “The Score.” Directed by Frank Oz and released in 2001, this movie is a thrilling crime drama that kept audiences on the edge of their seats. With an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando, and Angela Bassett, “The Score” is an unforgettable movie that still resonates with viewers today.

At its core, “The Score” is about Nick Wells (De Niro), an aging thief who wants out of the game. Despite his desire for retirement, Nick decides to take on one last job with his protégé Jack Teller (Norton) to steal a priceless scepter from the Montreal Customs House. However, things become complicated when Max (Brando), Nick’s fence and longtime friend, tells him that he must partner with Jack’s unpredictable associate (Bassett) for the heist.

The plot of “The Score” is expertly crafted with several twists and turns that keep viewers guessing until the very end. It’s rare for a heist movie to truly surprise its audience but this film does so in spades. The pacing is also spot-on; it never feels like the movie drags or rushes through important moments.

What stands out most about this film is its acting talent. De Niro delivers another stellar performance as Nick Wells; his portrayal of an aging thief who longs for retirement feels very real and relatable. Norton matches De Niro’s energy as Jack Teller; his character arc sees him growing more confident as the heist approaches while also struggling with personal demons. Brando rounds out the trio as Max; even in his later years, Brando had an undeniable presence on screen that captivates audiences. Meanwhile, Bassett delivers a knockout performance as Diane, Jack’s associate; her character is unpredictable and adds an element of danger to the heist.

The heist scenes in “The Score” are tense and exciting. The film does an excellent job of showing the audience how each step of the plan is executed while also keeping some details hidden until the last minute. The climactic scene where Nick must escape from the Customs House is particularly thrilling; it’s a testament to the film’s writing and directing that viewers are able to feel the stress and urgency of Nick’s situation.

While “The Score” may not have won any major awards, it did receive critical acclaim upon release. Roger Ebert gave the film four stars out of four, saying “It is one of those perfect constructions where you think back over everything, see how it was all planted, realize how neatly it was all tied up at the end.” It’s clear that this movie has stood the test of time and remains a fan favorite.

From a technical standpoint, “The Score” also excels. The cinematography by Rob Hahn captures both the grittiness of Montreal’s underground criminal world and the elegance of its more upscale locations. Additionally, Howard Shore’s score perfectly complements each scene; whether it’s a tense chase or a quiet moment between characters, Shore knows just what musical cues to use to enhance audience emotions.

Overall, “The Score” is an outstanding example of its genre – a well-written heist movie with exceptional acting performances that keeps viewers on their toes throughout its runtime. It’s no wonder that it has remained popular with audiences over 20 years after its original release. Whether you’re a fan of crime dramas or just enjoy seeing A-list actors at their best, “The Score” is definitely worth watching.
