“The Unknown Saint” – A Tale of Miracles and Mystery

In the dusty outskirts of Morocco lies a small village that has been forgotten by time. Here, the residents go about their daily lives, but there’s one thing that unites them all – their collective belief in the miraculous powers of a saint who is said to have died many years ago.

This is the setting for “The Unknown Saint,” a movie that explores the themes of faith, deceit, and greed. Directed by Alaa Eddine Aljem, this film takes us on a journey through the beautiful yet harsh landscapes of North Africa and introduces us to an ensemble cast of characters who are all searching for something elusive.

The Storyline

The story begins with a thief who tries to rob a construction site but ends up getting caught. He manages to hide his loot in what he thinks is a deserted area but soon discovers that he has unwittingly stumbled upon the tomb of the unknown saint.

Desperate to get his hands on his treasure, he decides to stay in the village and pose as a holy man who can perform miracles. He gains an instant following, with villagers flocking to him for help with healing ailments or rescuing them from poverty.

But things get complicated when the construction company starts building on top of the tomb, and the villagers realize that their beloved saint might have gotten lost forever under concrete and steel.

As tensions rise between different factions within the community, our protagonist has to navigate through various obstacles while keeping his identity hidden. Will he be able to find his treasure before it’s too late? Or will he be exposed as a fraud and pay for his sins?

The Plot

At its core, “The Unknown Saint” is about people’s need for hope and salvation. As one character puts it: “In this godforsaken place, we don’t have much else going for us.” The movie cleverly pokes fun at blind faith and the absurdity of religious rituals while simultaneously highlighting the comfort it provides to those who have nothing else to hold on to.

The film also delves into themes of greed and corruption, showing how even the most well-intentioned individuals can be swayed by the lure of money. The construction company is portrayed as a symbol of modernity and progress that threatens to destroy ancient traditions and beliefs. While the villagers resist this change, they are also opportunistic enough to take advantage of any chance to improve their lives.

The Characters

The cast of “The Unknown Saint” features some remarkable performances that bring to life a host of eccentric and memorable characters.

Our protagonist is played by Youssef Errami, who does an excellent job of conveying the inner turmoil of a man caught between his desire for wealth and his conscience. His transformation from a common thief to a charismatic leader is subtle yet believable.

Salah Bensalah steals the show with his portrayal of the village idiot who becomes an unwitting accomplice in our hero’s plan. His innocent demeanor and infectious smile make him endearing despite his limited intelligence.

Anas El Baz and Abdellah Didane play two shady businessmen who try to exploit the saint’s powers for their own benefit. Their interactions with each other are entertainingly snarky, providing some much-needed comic relief amidst all the drama.

The Score and Popularity

The soundtrack of “The Unknown Saint” complements its themes perfectly. Composer Amine Bouhafa has crafted a score that captures both the mysticism and humor of the film, using traditional Moroccan instruments like ouds and neys alongside contemporary electronic beats.

Despite its limited release, “The Unknown Saint” has garnered critical acclaim from festivals around the world. It won awards at Cannes, Toronto, San Sebastian, London Film Festival among others. It was also Morocco’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at last year’s Academy Awards.

The Cinematography

Cinematographer Amine Berrada’s visual style is one of the highlights of the film. He captures the stark beauty of the Moroccan landscape with stunning shots of sand dunes, rocky mountains, and blue skies. He also makes full use of natural light, creating a warm and organic feel to the visuals.

The Dialogue

The dialogue in “The Unknown Saint” is sparse but effective. The characters speak in a mix of Arabic and French, reflecting the colonial history of the country. Subtitles are used effectively to convey the nuances of each conversation.

The Editing

Editor Sofia Marques has done a great job in pacing the movie. She keeps it moving at a brisk pace while also allowing moments for contemplation and reflection.

The Development

“The Unknown Saint” was a passion project for Alaa Eddine Aljem, who spent years developing the screenplay. It was shot on location across Morocco on a shoestring budget, which is impressive considering how polished it looks on screen.

The Analysis

At its heart, “The Unknown Saint” is an exploration of human nature and how it can be shaped by our circumstances. It asks us to consider what we believe in and why we hold those beliefs dear.

Overall, “The Unknown Saint” is a gem that deserves wider recognition for its originality and insight into an often-overlooked region of North Africa.

As Hemingway once said: “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” This movie embodies that sentiment perfectly, reminding us all that miracles can come from unexpected places if we are open to them.
