Review

My dear readers, have you had the pleasure of viewing Lolly-Madonna XXX? This daring film is a departure from my beloved Jane Austen’s refined tales, but it proved to be a captivating story nonetheless.

A true masterpiece of the 1970s, Lolly-Madonna XXX draws its inspiration from the Appalachian novel “The Trouble with Lichen,” written by Sue Grafton. The plot centers on two families, the Feathers and the Gutshalls, who live in isolated homesteads deep amidst the rolling hills of Kentucky. Their feud dates back generations and escalates when Ludie (Rod Steiger), the patriarch of the Gutshall clan, mistakes a shipment of lumber intended for his rivals as his own. The stage is set for a high stakes showdown between both camps.

As the story unfolds, we witness forbidden passions, heart-wrenching betrayals, and heartbreaking sacrifices made by each character. The talented cast includes an array of Hollywood veterans such as Robert Ryan (Zach Feather), Jeff Bridges (Zack Feather), Randy Quaid (Finch Feather), Gary Busey (Zeb Gutshall) and Ed Lauter (Diamondback).

But what sets this movie apart is its electrifying score composed by Charles Bernstein. Its use of guitar twangs, banjo riffs and fiddle screeches perfectly captures the rustic ambiance of rural Kentucky and adds to the tension-filled mood created by director Richard C Sarafian.

Despite receiving mixed critics at its time of release in 1973, Lolly-Madonna XXX has since gained cult status among movie aficionados due to its gritty realism and raw emotions on display. It offers a glimpse into a forgotten world where blood feuds were still settled through violence and honor was everything.

One memorable scene that stands out for me is when Zack Feather confronts Zeb Gutshall about his family’s involvement in stealing their lumber. In a fit of rage, Zack screams, “You and your whole damn rotten family is gonna go down. The whole stinkin’ bunch of you! You’re gonna pay for this!” It’s a powerful moment that showed the depth of animosity between both sides.

The film’s title itself is intriguing, as it is not suggestive of its plot or characters. Some have speculated that the triple X rating in the title was added to draw in audiences hoping for something more salacious, while others believe it was a nod to its inclusion in the experimental XXX festival in Amsterdam.

Lolly-Madonna XXX was not without its flaws, however. Some criticized its heavy-handed symbolism, such as Ludie’s fascination with biology and his obsession with lichens, which some viewers found hard to relate to.

Overall, Lolly-Madonna XXX is an exceptional film that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who watches it. Its themes of family feuds and sacrifice are universal and relatable, even if they take place against the backdrop of rural Appalachia. Its haunting score and fantastic cast make it an unforgettable experience that should not be missed by cinema lovers everywhere.
