Review

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s talk about a movie that may have flown under your radar, but certainly deserves some attention. I’m talking about “The Game Plan”, a 2007 comedy starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as an NFL quarterback and his daughter, played by Madison Pettis.

Now, you might be thinking, “Oh great, another sports movie.” But wait! This one has heart, laughs, and even a little bit of drama. The storyline follows Joe Kingman (Johnson) who is the star quarterback for the Boston Rebels. He is living the high life – fast cars, fancy clothes and women throwing themselves at him left and right – until he suddenly receives an unexpected surprise.

His 8-year-old daughter Peyton (Pettis) shows up on his doorstep claiming to be his child from a previous relationship. Joe is floored and doesn’t know what to do with this newfound responsibility. Throw in some hilarious scenes like Johnson trying to do Peyton’s hair or realizing he has to attend her ballet lessons instead of going out with his friends; you’ve got yourself a fun family movie.

Speaking of Johnson’s acting skills… I have to say that he really shines in this role. We all know him as the action star in blockbusters like “Jumanji” or “The Fast and Furious” franchise but “The Game Plan” shows off his softer side as a father figure who learns how to connect with his daughter after years of not knowing she existed.

And let’s talk about Madison Pettis. Even at such a young age, she held her own against one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Her performance was charming and heartwarming as she navigates through her new life with her dad while still being true to herself.

Did you know that the original title for this film was “Daddy’s Girl”? However, it was changed because the producers thought it would limit the audience and focus only on the father-daughter relationship. That being said, it’s hard not to appreciate the chemistry between Johnson and Pettis on screen.

The score and popularity of this film are undoubtedly great. It made over $147 million worldwide, which is not too shabby if you ask me. And who could forget the catchy song “You Can’t Stop The Beat” by Nikki Blonsky that plays during end credits? It’s a real toe-tapping tune that will stay in your head for days.

Filming for this movie took place in Boston and various locations throughout Massachusetts. There were even some scenes filmed at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. Fun fact: Johnson actually got to throw a touchdown pass on the field before a game while filming!

Now, let’s dive into some evaluation… Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie mixed reviews with a current score of 29%. However, as Gary Vaynerchuk would say, “who cares about what critics think?” This movie was made for families to enjoy together and it definitely delivered on that front.

As far as awards go, there weren’t any major accolades given to “The Game Plan,” but it was nominated for an ESPY Award for Best Sports Movie in 2008.

When it comes to cinematography, there isn’t anything particularly noteworthy about this film… but that’s okay! Sometimes simplicity is key and this film does what it needs to do without being too flashy.

My personal opinion? I loved this movie. As someone who grew up watching feel-good family films like “Cheaper by the Dozen” or “The Pacifier”, “The Game Plan” fits right in with those classics. Sure, there are moments where you’ll roll your eyes or cringe at some of the more cheesy lines but overall it’s an enjoyable ride.

Let’s not forget about some standout scenes like when Johnson teaches Pettis how to throw a football or when they both sing and dance to the song “ABC” by The Jackson 5. It’s moments like these that make this movie so lovable.

In terms of gossip and special effects… there really wasn’t much to report. However, the development of the father-daughter relationship was executed well and felt genuine. It’s a reminder that family is important and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

The dialogue is witty and funny with lines like “I don’t know how you did this every day” (referring to Peyton’s hair) or “you’re strange but not in a bad way.” There were also some touching moments like when Joe tells Peyton that he’s proud of her for being brave during a dance recital.

Overall, “The Game Plan” is a charming family film that will make you laugh, cry and appreciate the value of family. Sure, it may not be an Oscar-worthy masterpiece but who says every movie needs to be? Sometimes all you need is a good ol’ fashioned feel-good flick with heartwarming moments that will leave you with a smile on your face long after the credits roll.
