Review

The Rugrats in Paris: The Movie is a truly heartwarming tale of friendship, family, and love. This animated feature film follows the lovable toddler characters from the popular television series as they journey to Paris, France, to attend the wedding of their parents’ friends.

The plot begins with Tommy Pickles feeling slightly jealous that his father, Stu Pickles, is always so busy with his work and inventions. Tommy longs for a mother figure in his life and when he hears about the wedding of his father’s friend Chas Finster to a French woman named Coco LaBouche, he believes that Coco would make an excellent mother for him and his friends.

Tommy convinces his friends Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Angelica, and Susie to go on an adventure to Paris along with their respective families in tow. Once they arrive in Paris, they are introduced to Coco who is portrayed as cold and calculating. Determined to win Chas over by winning over his son Chuckie’s affections; Coco takes the children to EuroReptarland – an amusement park – which she intends to purchase with her earnings from Finster Toys if she becomes Chas’ wife.

Although designed for children audiences, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie tackles mature themes such as greed and manipulation. Coco’s character epitomizes this as she deceives Chas into loving her by pretending to adore Chuckie even though she loathes children.

In this film sequel from the Emmy award-winning cartoon series from Nickelodeon Studios directed by Paul Demeyer and Stig Bergqvist; each character retains their unique personalities but expands on them dramatically. For example; Angelica – a bossy kid who loves being in charge – develops empathy for other people while Susie – her rival – learns how to be more assertive.

What makes this movie special is that it focuses on how children perceive the world around them. From the simplicity of the plot, easy dialogue and relatable themes, it holds a unique appeal to its audience. Additionally, the movie’s score composed by Mark Mothersbaugh who was also known for his work in Wes Anderson’s films provides a perfect backdrop.

Furthermore, although Rugrats in Paris: The Movie is a cartoon, it does not shy away from exposing children to new cultures. For example; by featuring French landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum or showcasing their culture with Coco LaBouche.

The cast of voice actors which include Elizabeth Daily (Tommy Pickles), Tara Strong (Dil Pickles), Cheryl Chase (Angelica Pickles), Kath Soucie (Lil and Phil DeVille), Nancy Cartwright (Chucky Finster) among others delivers excellent performances which makes it hard to tell they are adults portraying children characters.

According to Box Office Mojo, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie did well in theaters grossing over $103 million worldwide a year after its release date in November 2000. Additionally, it garnered nominati0ns for several awards including Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Movie and Annie Awards – an annual event that honors achievements in animation across television and movies – for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Theatrical Feature along with Matthew Wilder’s song “We’re Going Down” for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music for a Feature Production.

One criticism leveled on the film was its use of stereotypes such as having foreigners speaking English slower than usual or repeatedly saying ‘Oh La La’ to indicate French characters without exploring their culture more deeply which is ironic considering how they introduced French culture earlier on.

Despite this flaw, Rugrats fans would appreciate seeing their favorite characters on another adventure while being introduced to new cultures and values. Rugrats In Paris is a compelling movie that brings joy to young people through its themes while maintaining entertainment value for adults. Whether it be watching it for nostalgic reasons or introducing it to a new generation, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie is a timeless classic that brings smiles to faces.
