Review

The vulnerability and authenticity of “The Overnight”

In my opinion, one of the bravest and most insightful movies about modern relationships is “The Overnight”, a 2015 indie comedy-drama directed by Patrick Brice and starring Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling, Jason Schwartzman, and Judith Godrèche. This movie explores with humor, sensitivity, and surprise the themes of intimacy, identity, trust, jealousy, boundaries, gender roles, and communication in a way that challenges our assumptions and invites us to reflect on our own experiences.

At the center of the story are Alex (Scott) and Emily (Schilling), a young couple who move from Seattle to Los Angeles with their son RJ (R.J. Hermes) to pursue a fresh start. They meet Kurt (Schwartzman) at a playground where RJ plays with Kurt’s son Max (Max Moritt). Kurt is a charismatic artist who invites Alex and Emily to dinner at his house that night. Despite some initial awkwardness, they accept and soon find themselves in a strange but fascinating evening that involves wine, pizza, nudity, games, music, secrets, massages, and more.

From the beginning of their encounter with Kurt and his wife Charlotte (Godrèche), Alex and Emily face various challenges to their comfort zones. They feel out of place in their new environment where everyone seems more cultured or enlightened than them. They worry about leaving RJ alone with strangers even though he seems happy with Max. They feel attracted to the sensual energy between Kurt and Charlotte but also threatened by it. They struggle to express their desires without sounding rude or weird or insecure.

As the night progresses into morning and Alex and Emily face more intense situations together or separately with Kurt or Charlotte or themselves alone in different rooms or outside in the neighborhood or on drugs or pretending or confessing things they never expected to say out loud – we witness how vulnerable they become. We see how they reveal their fears, their doubts, their hopes, their flaws, and their humanity – to each other and to the audience.

For example, Alex admits that he is afraid of losing Emily’s love and affection if he doesn’t perform well in bed. Emily confesses that she has never had an orgasm with Alex. Kurt reveals that he has a fetish for male genitalia. Charlotte discloses that she was a high-class escort in Paris before marrying Kurt. RJ wakes up and joins the adults for a dance party in the living room. The neighbors complain about the noise and interrupt the party with a bizarre but also revealing request.

Throughout these moments of revelation, “The Overnight” does not judge or ridicule its characters but embraces them with empathy and humor. We can laugh at some of the absurd situations or witty dialogue while also feeling touched by the depth of emotions behind them. We can recognize ourselves in Alex or Emily or Kurt or Charlotte or RJ or all of them as flawed but lovable human beings who are trying to connect with others in meaningful ways.

One of my favorite quotes from “The Overnight” captures this essence:

“It’s funny because sometimes when you reveal things like this about yourself – to someone you barely know – it’s easier than talking to someone you’ve known your whole life.”

This quote speaks to the power of vulnerability – a concept that Brené Brown has researched and written about extensively in her books and talks. Vulnerability means being honest about our thoughts and feelings even if we fear rejection, criticism, or exposure. Vulnerability means admitting our mistakes and weaknesses even if we risk losing control, status, or respectability. Vulnerability means connecting with others on a deeper level by sharing what matters to us even if it makes us uncomfortable.

“The Overnight” shows how vulnerability can lead to intimacy when done with trust, respect, curiosity, and humor. It also shows how vulnerability can be scary and risky when done with ignorance, arrogance, judgment, or coercion. The movie balances these contrasts with skill and nuance, making us feel invested in the characters and rooting for their growth.

As for the technical aspects of “The Overnight”, the movie has a simple yet effective score by Julian Wass that supports the mood and energy of each scene. The cinematography by John Guleserian captures the warmth and colors of the Los Angeles neighborhood while also framing the intimacy and awkwardness of the characters. The editing by Christopher Donlon paces the story well and enhances some of the surprises or revelations.

“The Overnight” did not receive many awards or nominations but it did generate positive reviews from critics and audiences who praised its originality, humor, performances, and insights. It also generated some controversy or curiosity about its explicit content and nudity – some of which may be uncomfortable or offensive for some viewers – but I think that these elements serve a purpose in showing how vulnerable our bodies can be as well as our minds.

In conclusion, “The Overnight” is a movie that I would recommend to anyone who wants to explore the complexities of relationships in a candid, funny, and insightful way. It’s a movie that challenges our assumptions about gender roles, sexual norms, cultural differences, and human nature while also celebrating our capacity for connection through vulnerability. It’s a movie that reminds us that sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zones to discover ourselves and others more fully. And it’s a movie that confirms my belief that Brené Brown would love it if she watched it.
